UPS for DOWNS is a non-profit corporation offering support, acceptance and encouragement for parents with families of persons with Down syndrome. We work to increase awareness and knowledge, educate the community about the presence, the potential and the needs of people with Down syndrome.

The UPS for DownS Charity Running Team is running the 2008 Chicago Distance Classic Half Marathon in memory of Katie MacDonald. Katie MacDonald was a young woman with Down syndrome who was a shining example of hope and independence for those with Down syndrome. Katie died suddenly at age 29. Katie's ability to read and love of reading was an important source of her independence. UPS for DownS created the Katie MacDonald Literacy Project to honor Katie and to promote literacy among individuals of all ages who have Down syndrome. Funds raised by the marathon team will be used to promote the UPS for DownS Katie MacDonald Literacy Program and the Katie MacDonald Memorial Scholarships.

"We didn't know what we didn't know, until another parent who has been through it helped us find our voice and speak our questions out loud."

Katie MacDonald Down Syndrome Literacy Project Mission Statement

"To honor the memory of Katie MacDonald, who, with the help of her mother, was instrumental in paving the way of inclusion for children and adults with Down syndrome. Our goal is to increase public awareness that people with Down syndrome can and do learn to read. Our hope is that we will keep Katie's spirit alive in our community by continuing to expand on all that she accomplished through her lifetime."
